Experiencing the Natural Beauty of the Algarve

From Turquoise Blue Waters to Serene Rolling Hills

With all the five-star facilities, iconic golf courses and excellent restaurants, it’s perfectly possible to enjoy your entire holiday making the most of all Penina Hotel & Golf Resort has to offer. However, if a sense of wanderlust does take hold, there are so many amazing examples of natural beauty to be seen across the region. Here’s our pick of the very best destinations to visit on your scenic tour of the Algarve.

Beaches

Found at the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, the Algarve is blessed with some of the finest beaches in all of Portugal. Chief among these is the Praia de Falesia in Albufiera, which has been named as one of the very best beaches in Europe by TripAdvisor. Famous, for its soft golden sand and distinctive orange cliffs, the beach is a favourite among tourists and locals alike. Other popular beaches include the tranquil Praia de Marinha and the picturesque Alvor Boardwalk, located just a few minutes’ drive from Penina.

Serra de Monchique

Approximately 15 miles inland from the west coast of the Algarve, you’ll find the imposing Serra de Monchique mountain chain. The highest point in the chain is the mountain of Fóia, which tops out an impressive 902m. Hiking in these mountains is very popular for two important reasons: the views and the wildlife. It’s obviously essential to take the necessary precautions when heading out on a hike, but the relatively gentle slopes mean it is accessible to even novice hikers. Plus, there’s a chance you might see an eagle or rare Iberian lynx, just a few of the animals that call the Algarve home.

Ria Formosa Nature Park

If the trek up the Serra de Monchique is too challenging, another popular visitor attraction where you can find peace and tranquility is the Ria Formosa Nature Park. Covering over 170km² of land on one of the southernmost spots of Portugal, the park certainly has plenty to explore. Set aside to provide a home for the region’s animal and plant life, you’ll be able to see a range of wildlife and lush greenery. In particular, the array of birds that will land there during migratory periods are quite a sight to behold. You can explore the park on foot, by bicycle or even kayak around the many lagoons and tributaries.

All of these excellent examples of nature found in the Algarve region are within easy travelling distance from the five-star Penina Hotel & Golf Resort. During a seven-night stay in our five-star accommodation, you’ll experience three action-packed cycling tours, exploring everything from the hills of Serra de Monchique to the bustling city of Portimao.

More than a Golf Resort

The Best Leisure Activities available at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Along with its five-star service, excellent location and six delicious restaurants, Penina is undoubtedly best known for its world-class golf courses. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course was the first course in the whole of the Algarve and is still regarded as one of the best and most playable in the region. However, Penina has so many more leisure activities than simply Golf, from tennis courts to jogging track:

Five ATP Tennis Courts

If you're looking for something a bit more intense than a round of golf, then Penina's excellent tennis facilities are perfect for you. We've got five all-weather hard courts, one of which is fully floodlit, so you can continue your game even when the sun starts to set. Plus, with a professional on site, with whom you can book lessons, you can improve your technique and skills out on the court. There's also equipment rental available, just in case you've forgotten your racket.

Jogging Track and 24-hour Fitness Facility

While Penina offers plenty of opportunity to relax and unwind, we recognise that many of you will have workout regimes or training goals you need to continue while on holiday. With this in mind, Penina has both a fitness facility, which is open 24 hours a day, and a jogging track. If this wasn't enough, we also offer bicycle rental, meaning you can head out into the Algarve and take in the sights and sounds of this picturesque region.

24-Hour Fitness Facility
The Algarve's Largest Outdoor Private Pool

While you'd certainly expect to find a swimming pool at a five-star hotel resort in the Algarve, you may be pleasantly surprised by the sheer size of the pool at Penina. Whether you're swimming a few lengths or just relaxing, you'll have plenty of room to do your own thing. There's also a children’s pool for the little ones.

Golf Pro Shop, Driving Range and Putting Green

You're probably aware of our selection of Golf Courses (we have three, if you're wondering), but did you know we have a whole range of golfing facilities to help you make the most of the rounds you play? To start with, there's a fully equipped pro shop, a state-of-the-art driving range with 12 covered bays, putting green and practice green. If you want to take your golf to the next level, we also have a range of golf clinics available to fine tune your game.

The Driving Range at Penina
An Action-Packed Holiday in the Algarve

Regardless of whether you plan on spending your time relaxing poolside or trying your hand at all the leisure activities in the resort, which also includes billiards and a game room in addition to those listed above, you'll be treated to an unforgettable break in five-star settings at Penina. Algarve St Andrew's Ball at Penina Hotel & Golf Resort

Join the Saint Andrew’s Society of the Algarve for their annual ball on the 30th November 2013. This year the event is falling on St Andrew’s day itself and should be an all singing, all dancing, occasion to remember.

The event gets underway at 7.00pm when participants will be piped in to the Champagne reception by the talented Malcolm MacGillivray. This will be followed by a knockdown, knees up buffet, accompanied by wine... followed by coffee accompanied by Atholl Brose.

The Sounds of Islay – a genuine Ceilidh band from Scotland who are flying over especially – will guarantee to get your toes tapping and your feet dancing. They’ll be plenty of people on hand to help you try out this traditional Scottish dancing for the first time... should you feel the urge.

The ball is priced at €37.50 for Society members and €40 for non-members. If you thinking of coming to the ball and staying overnight at the hotel - or perhaps playing a round of golf on the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course as well... we’ve laid on a very special rate for the event.
